The Youth Ministry Playbook, the Leadership Honor Code, and the Youth Protection Policy is a comprehensive guide that outlines the vision, goals, and operational framework for Riverside Church’s youth programs. It provides clear guidelines for creating a safe, engaging, and spiritually enriching environment for students.

Key components include:

  • Core Values and Beliefs: Emphasizing community, service, and faith development.
  • Programs and Pathways: Details on RY Nights, RAVE Nights, weekend services, and Growth Track, which help students connect, grow, and serve.
  • Volunteer Roles and Expectations: Guidelines for various serving opportunities, from small group leaders to activity teams, ensuring impactful engagement with students.
  • Safety and Integrity: Policies to protect both students and volunteers, including communication, social media, and behavior standards.
  • Spiritual Growth: Encourages volunteers to seek personal growth through prayer, Bible study, and consistent service.

This playbook equips leaders to effectively mentor students, fostering an environment where young people can develop a meaningful relationship with Christ and build a strong community within the church.

In youth ministry, building trust, respect, and comfort with students is key. Volunteers should set boundaries, focus on rapport, respect privacy, avoid authoritative or disciplinary tones, and use clear, kind communication to foster healthy relationships.

Ministry thrives on safe, professional boundaries. Avoid romantic advances or intentions toward students, respect gender boundaries in mentorship, and follow strict rules on interactions. Graduated students remain under care for 6 months. Violations lead to removal.

Social media is key to connecting with teens, but as a youth volunteer, follow these guidelines: represent the church, let students reach out first, keep interactions public, have fun but stay Christlike, avoid shaming, and report concerns to leaders or parents.

Connecting with youth outside church builds lasting relationships. Do so safely by meeting in groups, attending public events, or hosting game nights at a parent’s house. Support students at games or school lunches, and always follow church and school guidelines.

Partnering with parents is vital for student ministry. Over-communicate with parents, invite them into conversations by sharing discussion prompts, and create opportunities for them to serve alongside their teens. Show parents you’re inspiring their child, and they’ll support your ministry.

Working with children is rewarding but comes with risks. Follow these guidelines: avoid hugs; use high-fives or fist bumps instead. Set clear physical boundaries. For restrooms, wait outside for older kids. For younger ones, involve two adults of the same gender for assistance.
