God’s got this.

Nehemiah 1:3-4 They said to me, “Those who survived the exile and are back in the province are in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.” When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven.

Mourn Fast Pray

Psalm 34:18 The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

Matthew 5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

Psalms 94:19 When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy.

Joel 2:12 “Even now,” declares the LORD, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.”

Psalm 28:1 To you, LORD, I call; you are my Rock, do not turn a deaf ear to me. For if you remain silent, I will be like those who go down to the pit.

Recognize who God is.

Nehemiah 1:5-6 Then I said: “LORD, the God of heaven, the great and awesome God, who keeps his covenant of love with those who love him and keep his commandments let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father’s family, have committed against you.

Confess who you are.

Nehemiah 1:6-7 Let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer your servant is praying before you day and night for your servants, the people of Israel. I confess the sins we Israelites, including myself and my father’s family, have committed against you. We have acted very wickedly toward you. We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Call on God’s promises.

Nehemiah 1:8-9 Remember the instruction you gave your servant Moses, saying, “If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations but if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.”

Nehemiah 2:20 The God of heaven will give us success. We his servants will start rebuilding. (edited)

Ask for specific help.

Nehemiah 1:11 Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man.” I was cupbearer to the king.

Express your hurt to God. Fast

Pray through the four parts of Nehemiah’s prayer.
